Use of log data in empirical educational research – an analysis of needs

Logdaten, die im Rahmen computer-basierter Erhebungen anfallen, rücken immer stärker in den Fokus der Forschungsgemeinschaft der empirischen Bildungsforschung. Die vorliegende Bedarfsanalyse soll einen ersten Einblick in die aktuelle Nutzung von Logdaten in der empirischen Bildungsforschung geben und Forschungsdatenzentren informierte Entscheidungen bezüglich der Bereitstellung von Logdaten ermöglichen.

Currently, an increasing amount of research in empirical educational research and psychology focuses on the analysis of log data collected in the context of computer-based achievement tests. However, there is still very little understanding of how these data should be collected and made available in research data centres. The needs analysis on the use of log data shows that both log data indicators and raw log data are relevant for research practice. In addition, concrete recommendations for action for research data centres are formulated on the one hand, on the other open questions that still need to be clarified in order to ensure a FAIR provision are formulated.
